Charlie Kaufman Talks About His Writing Process in a Master Class
Charlie Kaufman, screenwriter of Human Nature, Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Adaptation and Synecdoche New York, that he also directed, talks about his creative process at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Mentioning an anecdote that happened to him the same morning in Vancouver, Kaufman made a nice analogy with his creative process and concluded:
My screenplay is made of the things that I experience in the process of thinking I’m going to experience something else, of being cognizant of what is going on in my head while I’m trying to do what I’m trying to do, and of allowing myself to know that the path has not yet been created and I’m going to utilize what it is that I am experiencing in the world and in life in order to sort of make this thing happen. It’s scary because it may be a disaster and I may miss my deadline.
