How to Shoot a Free Climber… With the Budget of ’60 Minutes’
If you ever wondered how extreme sports were covered, this 5 minute backstage video will give you one or two clues. War zone reporter Jeff Newton (and mountain climber during his spare time) was asked to cover free climber Alex Honnold’s ascension for CBS 60 minutes.
So don’t be surprised, this is no low-budget crew. Cameras were placed everywhere and it’s probably very far from a National Geographic reporter experience climbing the Himalaya with a blind lama, but it’s still interesting to listen to Newton explaining how he thought through the coverage and how he and his team placed the cameras on the rock that Honnold was climbing, making sure it wasn’t going to take him out of his concentration but still capturing every moment.
All in all, a nice short piece to open your appetite for the matter.[Via Fstoppers]
