Spike Jonze & Olympia Le-Tan Book Covers Animated Collaboration Available To Watch On The Internet
Spike Jonze is a filmmaker and he won’t let categories limit him or his work. After his numerous collaborations with the music world including Arcade Fire, Jay-Z and Kanye West, The Beastie Boys, and his always distinctive works in the advertising field for Ikea, Adidas, and more recently for Absolut Vodka with a dreamy short titled ‘I’m Here‘, Jonze just completed a new collaboration with designer Olympia Le-Tan in the form of an animated short movie.
The short, titled Mourir Aupres de Toi (To Die By Your Side) takes place in the mythical Parisian bookstore Shakespeare and Co where book covers are brought back to life when the store closes, and a love story follows.
In an interview with Nowness, which released Mourir Aupres de Toi, Jonze said he got inspired by all the scraps and cutouts left in Le-Tan’s bag and wanted to collaborate with her out of pure pleasure.
The two artists wrote the story together with the help of Simon Cahn whenever they saw each other. Le-Tan explains:
We worked on it as a side project for about a year and a half, on and off. Cutting up all the little felt pieces was really intense and took about 3 months non-stop. I think there were over 3000 pieces. Then our animators turned it all into a movie. They worked night and day for 2 months.

Le-Tan put a one minute teaser for Mourir… on her website, that I added below, and can be watch now as a making-of:[via @les Inrocks]
