[TGWTDT] Dallas Hunt: A Helper Story
To start (or continue) this week-end I offer you the Dallas story told from Brandon a.k.a @GuestUser17, an Atlanta Helper, point of view.
I wasn’t the one that found the package in Dallas but I sent Frank Jimenez and his kids off on their adventure. Although I’m in Atlanta I’ve known Frank for several years after we met virtually during one of our company’s team-building ARGs.
Here are the events from my perspective that led up to the find:
I had been looking for a new ARG to get involved in after the Human Preservation Project finished and came across this one over the weekend. I setup my phone on Monday night to receive notifications of tweets from MouthTaped Shut and sure enough the next day I get the tweets about the Atlanta hunt. I started driving down but the weather had affected traffic and I knew there was no way I’d get there in time from where I was. When I saw that it had been found, I figured that would be the end of my involvement but that was not the case.
On Wednesday I was just packing up my laptop to head out for a meeting when the first tweet from MTS came through on my phone. I hurriedly went back to my desk and checked the Mouth-Taped-Shut website for the new clue. As I was looking at the picture trying to figure out what the numbers meant a new tweet came in from @523 simply saying:
I instantly knew I had to get in touch with Frank so I checked his online status and seeing he was at his computer, sent him a message with the coordinates and the corresponding address from Google. A few minutes passed with no response so I sent him an urgent email and packed up again to head out of the office. As I was standing waiting for the elevator I checked my sent mail on my phone and realized that I had closed the laptop before it had had a chance to transmit the mail! I quickly took the laptop out and opened it up and within seconds the email was gone.
About 10 minutes later I received a call from Frank that he had read my email and he wanted to know if it had been found. He was out running errands with his children about 30 minutes North of Oak Cliff and when they found out the package was still unclaimed they headed straight for those coordinates.
I forwarded on the tweet from @Kierkegaardi with the exact location of the bench and he replied back that he was now 20 minutes away. I waited…
About 35 minutes later I called him back to see if he had found the bench. He had just left the area after reading the clue. Being a great sportsman he had taken a picture of the clue and then placed it back where he found it for the other hunters. He didn’t remember the exact message on the clue but said it was something to do with architecture and 1st and 2nd. He didn’t see any streets around the area with 1st and 2nd so I tried hitting Google to see what results it gave me while he found the picture of the clue to send me.
This was the first hit I got back with the picture of Lake Cliff Towers:
My thinking was the 1st and 2nd referred to the two towers but when I received the photo of the clue it all made sense.
I called back Frank who was now surrounded by people looking around the bench and told him to try the Towers. He headed off there with his Children and I waited again. At this point I had no idea how many other people had seen the clue so it could have been anyone that found it.
Finally I received a call back from Frank saying that his kids had it:
What I subsequently learned is that his son is a huge David Fincher fan so he was beside himself that he now had a piece of the movie. Frank is now researching on mentorless and NIN what he has missed of the ARG.
