[TGWTDT] The Hunt Heats Up With 6 Clues in Two Days.
As expected things are speeding up and between yesterday and today six more flowers were discovered.
Unlike Tuesday, some ciphers were a bit challenging, to everybody’s happiness.
In chronological order and for your consideration, here is the report:
We had a special treat with the first picture posted by MTS at 10h05am PST on Wednesday and that you can see above.
The tilted close up of the Swedish map with Bollnäs circled and Bridge written on the right took a lot of collective wondering, speculations, head scratching and no less than MTS little extra help to find a resolution.
I tried my best to reconstitute the key steps but if I skipped one or got one wrong, let me know!
Here we go, recap within the recap:
For more than an hour, we tried the Swedish bridges, the Google Street View/Seasons Changing Map, the Swedish Airports, Bollnäs antic name and if you want to relive the fun, I recommend you go read the MTS comments section.
At 11h18am PST, @523 tweeted back the picture with the grey dots isolated:
There was no confirmation than the grey dots were getting us any closer to a solution than say, all the other dots and numbers on the map, and for another 15 minutes the Happy Searchers kept scratching their heads, until MTS posted a comment (!):
Nine grey dots for a nine letter word, that could work.
Finally it turned out that by isolating the last letter of each city next to a grey dot, you obtained lykstearp, an anagram of:
(and I believe we have to thank @joshnumbersix for that)
/stalkprey unlocked the new destination, MILWAUKEE.
(Special thanks to @523, @star_nubalo, @antovolk and @guiltyx for the screen capture)
The story doesn’t quite ends here. If you have been around for the last few weeks you might remember that Berlin Happy Helper @conigs is from Milwaukee and in fact, no later than Tuesday he said:
Well, that was a good omen since he found the flower and became the first Happy Hunter of the day. Look out for his testimony, already written and waiting on the line.
At 12h56pm PST, MTS tweeted:
It’s a reference to Blomkvist paper with the name of the victims and the Bible reference they’re linked to. I had the picture from CFITT but I wasn’t following the hunt live to share it, so here we go:
Craig/Blomkvist was pointing right at the answer:
that turned out to be in Tampa, FLORIDA.
I don’t believe we know who the Happy Hunter is, but kudos anyway!
1h56pm PST, the second picture of the day was posted:
The interesting thing about this clue is that you needed to overlay it on a picture of the Swedish Map with a pointing finger on it. (The sum of the two previous clues in a way.)
To do so, you had to remember that MTS posted the needed picture before the hunt started, back in September. I’m sure I’ve seen someone posting a picture of the two photos together, but I couldn’t find it back, so here is the regular picture:
(thanks to Paul Scott)
The grey dots were indicating five cities with an odd number of letters:
And you had to take the middle letter of each city and find the anagram SNARL (i.e. to make excessively complicated says Merriam)
That lead us to Houston and Happy Hunter @tadamz to score a flower:
This morning at 9am PST we were in for another salve of clues, starting with this picture:
Similarly to the Milwaukee clue, the obvious information on this map were irrelevant but still captured the majority’s attention.
In the race to find out how to unlock What Is Hidden In Snow page, @dxiong5 won, spotting where the cipher was located, solving it and sharing it first.
You had to look at that part of the picture:
Several roman numbers are written around the cross, I, IX, XIV, III, VIII, and equals to a letter in the alphabet, A, I, N, C, H, forming the word:
leading to Indianapolis. For a national flower, finding it took more time than usual but ended up in the hands of… @dxiong5‘s cousin!
Just like Wednesday MTS tweeted a second clue:
and binary code it was:
/lie was the word unlocking WIHIS and revealing Paris as the International destination of the day and the first European city to get a second flower.
Many elements disturb me here (again):
- Why Paris again? Especially when very few Parisians seem to care (I feel ashamed as I write this) and we know that Italian Hunters are following for exemple. (and that’s just for Europe)
- Why not starting the day with the International clue instead of planting it so late during the day? Have you never been in Europe during winter? Nobody wants to get out of their house once they’re home, it’s cold and it sucks.
- Why the Trocadero?! If you’ve never been to Paris, this won’t make much sense, but seriously, the people who live near by the Trocadero are not the people caring about a treasure hunt in the middle of the dark to score a dry flower. I would have picked something around Bastille or Republique, but that’s just me and because I think there’s less raping risks.
- And finally, why is it that the daytime clues are so obvious (my clue #2 was literally behind the ‘F’ in the picture, and let’s not even comment on the number of ‘bench’ clues) while International clues have an establishing shot of a bridge or two trees?
Paris turned out to be a Hunter’s Berlin nightmare all over again, and I think catch_the_mouse deserves a special kudos for going back to the Troca in the middle of the night and trying her best all the while keeping the community posted.
Unfortunately, she couldn’t find the flower and we are still waiting to know who did.
Yes, you’re reading well, New York is the sixth and last city of these two crazy days.
@conigs find out about the third clue when he noticed that What Is Hidden In Snow suddenly appeared as:
(thanks to @conigs)
The answer was hidden in the Source of the CFITT pop up:
(thanks to @conigs)
The first line and the last line were holding the key words: honey pot.
And if, like many of us, you’re thinking ‘Winnie the Pooh?!‘ trying to remember when that was mentioned in TGWTDT, click on the tweet below to discover why (it is very cool):
So, all this to unlock the New-Yorker bis repetita:
(thanks to @star_nubalo)
Why New-York again? We don’t know. But what we do know is that the flower has been found by @gsiener:
Maxi Kudos to everybody!
If you hanged a little bit more on the #MOUTHTAPEDSHUT feed, you’ve probably seen that some of the Happy Helpers/Happy Hunters started tweeting codes instead of regular sentences. It’s getting crazier by the minute and that’s probably what MTS was hoping to get.
People are more involved than ever because we know there’s only two weeks left, ciphers are harder and often require collaboration, same for the hunts. If you’re looking for excitements, I would keep hanging around until it ends, my guess is that it should only grow crazier.
