Why All Filmmakers and Storytellers Should Take Free Coursera Classes
With more than 2 million online students and a win as ‘Best New Start Up of 2012’, it is hard to believe that
Coursera, a website offering free access to online education from 29 International Universities hasn’t celebrated its first birthday yet.
Coursera is a simple and efficient website with a clean design that offers an always growing catalog of classes covering a wide range of topics, cinema included. In a click you can enroll in a Berklee College of Music class and learn about sound design, or attend a class from the University of London International Programmes, or The University of Tokyo etc. you get the drill.
I have been lucky enough to discovered this website last May and have enrolled in 13 classes since. Many of them are still to come, but I have had an amazing experience as a user and a learner so far. If you are a self-taught storyteller, like me, chances are this website will feel like the graal.
Why Is Coursera An Essential Tool For Filmmakers and Storytellers?
I strongly believe in continuing education as a human being in general, but especially when you are in the business of telling stories. Having an open mind and trying to learn as much as possible, whether it be on technical aspects of filmmakers or on the science of hacking if you are say, writing a script about that subject, or digging a little bit more about film theory.
Filmmakers such as Nirvan Mullick, who has accomplished a tremendous change in the lives of many now with his short documentary Caine’s Arcade, or Casey Neistat, with his diy/gear doesn’t matter attitude, have proved that stories are everywhere, you just need to go out, open your eyes and be receptive.
Coursera is another door opening to a multitude of universes that were only accessible by a handful of people conveniently located geographically. There is no limit of subjects or enrollments you can take, and the range of subjects is mind-blowing.

I hope you’ll have a blast taking classes from Universities and Countries you might never set foot in!
