Write Down Your Alien List: If You Had to Initiate an Alien to Films, What Would You Share?
This morning I was complaining on Twitter about the Internet’s reaction to Spike Lee’s list of “Essential Films”, a list Lee gives each year to his film students at NYU and he shared during his Kickstarter campaign. The reason I complained was because I grew tired of seeing the same 20 directors that everybody quotes religiously. Not that these directors didn’t make great movies. We know. We’ve all seen them. We’ve all been influenced by them, one way or another. But come on, COME ON, we are talking about filmmaking, the art of storytelling with sounds and moving images. An art used everywhere in the world to tell many different stories and yet, we always end up with the same pool of directors. Really?
My frustration is not directed towards Lee. There is no contesting someone’s list after all. But I am french, I am a woman, I am self-taught, and because of these three factors only, the movies I have seen and that have influenced me are very different from his. And I can’t possibly be the only person who has a different list.
So it got me thinking. If I were to meet aliens (or film students) what list would I give them? If I wanted to introduce them to the power of storytelling through films I would probably want to introduce them to as much diversity as possible. Because I tend to think that if you put one Kubrick on your list and they like it, they will watch the other Kubricks. (assuming they are smart aliens).
Thanks to @alenamolly and following Tina Roth Eisenberg’s advice that if you’re not happy about something, you should either do something or shut up, I’ve decided to throw an invitation to everyone to share their *ALIEN LIST*. Maybe your list is close to Lee’s, but maybe you too have been influenced by very different movies.
I am very aware that it is a bit of a dangerous exercise, that this offer can be ignored by everyone and/or bring massive trolls’s wave, but my hope is that it will make us discover films that *you* consider were essentials to your upbringing as movie lovers and others might have never heard of.
This is merely an opportunity to expand our horizon.
Share Your *Alien List*
- A list of 25 films that deeply influenced you as of today.
- There are no right or wrong
- Open to any genres (short films included!), any nationalities, any gender or races. Don’t feel like you have to be diverse or elitist because it sounds great. If the 25 films that influenced you are 25 gore movies, go for it!
How Does This Work?
Any way you want. Put your list in the comment section or, if you feel creative, write it down and scan it, do a collage, make a video, whatever works for you. You can send me your lists at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will update this post.
