How Did Hollywood Come to Be? A Crash Course Video Retraces its History
“Welcome to Film School’d”, here is how starts the latest epic 9 min of video from Cineflix -the team behind the Top 12 Long Takes Ever Filmed– that goes way back until 65 A.D.* until today, from a mind blown in ancient Greece -in lieu, Ptolemy, realizing you can create the illusion of movements when drawing various stage of movements next to one another- to today’s Youtube, Netflix, and the multiple platforms you can use to watch about everything and anything, as long as you have an Internet connection.
Hollywood story is one made of accidents (see the $25,000 bet), practicalities (more sun in the West? Let’s go West!), is intertwined with politics (see the production code!) and the need for greed, of course. Fortunately, these multiple forces didn’t prevent filmmakers to find ways to tell great stories, and Cinema to become a powerful and global medium to share, connect and entertain with an audience.
I just happen to have mentioned it in my latest newsletter, but I’ll say it again here: if you enjoy the video below and would like to deepen your understanding and knowledge about the Hollywood System, two must reads for me are Peter Biskind Easy Rider, Raging Bulls, that cover the 70s in Hollywood (the Golden Era), and Down and Dirty Pictures: Miramax, Sundance and the Rise of Independent Film that picks up in the 90s.
But first, watch your crash course below:
*It would have been nice to see Chinese philosopher Mozi mentioned, as he is the very very first inventor of the camera obscura and consequently, the ultimate padre of the seventh art, but Westernian History wins.[Thanks to the Tao of Color]
