How Much Can You Accomplish in 52 Weeks to Make an Indie Feature Film? (The Film Log #1)
The Film Log is a weekly video I record to share my journey making my first feature film, In Five Years. In these videos, I share what I learn and discover as I go about all aspects of being a first time indie filmmaker in today’s changing landscape. How Much Can You Accomplish in 52 Weeks to Make an Indie Feature Film?
It’s too bad Nike took the ‘Just Do It’ motto because it is the perfect motto for creative. Just Do It. Whatever is stopping you in your head right now, put it on pause, and go for it.
This is what I try to do on a regular basis, to stop procrastinating and move forward, even if only by one millimeter.
A few days ago, on Christmas Eve actually, I received the best news an indie filmmaker can get: I got a producer interested in helping me make my film.
For the first time since I’ve started mentorless, I’m hopping on the unknown and arduous journey of making a feature film.
I have no clue what’s going to happen, if it’s going to happen, and how it’s going to happen, but I’ve decided to take you on that journey with me, that is, those of you who wants to join.
And to do that, I’ve decided to vlog. It’s a medium I personally enjoy a lot as an audience, and I’ve been wanting to try for a while. I just had a massive amount of ‘yes but…’ up until now, that were preventing me from doing so.
Yes (I want to vlog) but:
– I don’t like being in front of a camera
– I have an accent
– I don’t have a camera (ha!)
– My computer might die any minutes now
– I don’t have time
– [insert 100 other reasons]
Yesterday I decided to just do it.
All the reasons that had prevented me from doing it up until now are still valid. There will always be a million reasons why not to do anything, but I’m a story fabricator, and I need to fabricate. I need to share what I’m learning, and learn from my mistakes, bad productions, chaotic time management and everything in between.
So I went for it and here is the very first episode of the Film-Log.
This is as raw as it can be. I will discover along with you how long this adventure will go, and where it will lead me/us.
If you think there might be some value following this filmmaking journey, let me know in the comment what you’d like to know about it. I’ll do my best to reply clearly, honestly and to find out answers if needed, for now or in future episodes.
This is not perfect. But what is? And does it matter? I believe what matters is healthy personal growth to live a better life along with other humans. Might sound cheesy but it’s not an easy task. And this is my way of doing it.
So, if you feel paralyzed by a lack of tools, wished you had a DSLR, a crane, an editing booth, external hard drives to back up everything, a proper mic, an english accent, a liking for being in front of a camera, I hope this video will inspire you to just do it, because better doing than nothing.
Let’s savor 2016 with great enthusiasm!
