Change of Plans (The Film Log #4)
The Film Log is a weekly video I record to share my journey making my first feature film, In Five Years. In these videos, I share what I learn and discover as I go about all aspects of being a first time indie filmmaker in today’s changing landscape. You can find the full Film Log series here, and you can subscribe to the film’s newsletter
Change of Plans
The journey into hiding the deadline for the Torino Film Lab continues, and the pressure is going up.
In episode 4, thoughts about setting up the right mood in pre-rewriting, the actual re-writing and building a mood board.
This episode was edited on FCPX on a MacBook Air. It was my first real time on FCPX, it was not as bad as I thought it would be but I definitely felt like a toddler. Doing a basic motion with keyframes never felt that challenging.
Also, and to nobodies surprise, even the best MacBook Air is not fit for a light montage on FCPX. This is what happens when you don’t have the budget to buy a MacBook Pro, concessions, concessions. I have no doubt this will have an impact on my future creative choices to make the vlog, depending on how much time I have and how many hours I want to waste waiting, but I also think that this is part of the game.
I remember a time, not so long ago, where I was learning how to edit on a iMac G3 with (a paper version of course) of Final Cut Express for Dummies, and feeling like the Queen of the world. So it’s important to remember that, as broke creatives -which I’m definitely a part of at the moment, there will always be better tool that will be out of our reach, but whatever we have we can leverage to create, and that is so much better than nothing.
Episode #4 went through massive edits content-wise and that’s probably my favorite episode so far, as I feel I’m sharing some hard learned knowledge and not simply facts. But you tell me, maybe I’m delusional.
I don’t know why I took this direction for this post, but feeling in the mood to make it more personal somehow. It happens.
So here is episode 4 and below it, another video I made about my creative process doing a pre-rewriting session, for those who are curious.
