written by Hugh Howey (2013)
I finally read the third and last book from Hugh Howey ‘Silo Saga’. If you’ve been on the list from the get go, you remember that the first two made it as well. Quite some time has passed since I had read the second installment so it took me a few chapters to get back on track, but I am happy I finished it, and it was definitely worth my time.
I still can’t quite believe that this few thousand pages started out as a short story uploaded online without any plans to go further. I can’t quantify it, but knowing the story behind this trilogy positively colored my reading.
Howey also did something surprising: right before the ‘epilogue’ he ‘broke the fourth wall’ and talked to the reader (me), explaining the backstory behind this trilogy etc. It was a novel experience to have the narrative structure interrupted, and I liked it. I thought it was bold and it really made me connect with the writer.
Storytelling times are changing and it’s fascinating.
