The Art of Asking
written by Amanda Palmer (2014)
I’ve talked before about Amanda Palmer’s book on my filmmaking blog, and it’s also part of my unconventional resources for filmmakers‘ list.
If you have a history with ‘the art of asking’, either because you’re afraid to ask, or because you think asking is a weakness, or because you can’t quite ask in a way that makes people want to help, I would say read this book.
It’s not a ‘how-to’ book, Palmer doesn’t give you a recipe to ask for things, but she tells you a million stories related to asking, and your mirror neurons (or whatever cousin neurons are activated when you read) will probably start working at full speed.
I’ve finished it at the beginning of January, and I’m surprised at the number of little changes I’ve started implanting in about everything I do. For the better.
I have no clue if you can read this book without knowing at least a little bit about Amanda Palmer, so if you are curious, I recommend watching her excellent TED Talk, which went viral, got her the publishing deal and is basically a crash introduction to her Universe.
The Art of Asking was selected in the Monthly Creative Menu #13, which was emailed in February 2015.
