The Obstacle Is the Way
written by Ryan Holiday
The Obstacle Is the Way is a short read from the young (he is 27) and extremely successful media strategist Ryan Holiday.
To quote Wikipedia, “the book is based on the Stoic exercise of framing obstacles as opportunities”. If – like me – you don’t consider yourself a specialist of the Stoic’s philosophy, Holiday’s book is a very pleasant introduction with a modern spin to it. (Holiday deconstructs behaviors from politicians, athletes, businessmen and linked it to stoic’s principles.)
It seems like an unconventional pairing to read from a 20 something media strategist motivational and life advice with a flavor of stoicism, and sometimes the tone of the book is a bit off, but, if you can go beyond that, I think you’re in for a treat.
In the week I read it, I probably mentioned it to close to 10 people, and if it were translated in French -it isn’t at the moment- I would have offered it to everybody I care about back home, because let’s face it, 90% of what is happening in our life is driven by our reaction to our perception to what’s happening. And a lot of us get stuck in this loop, unaware that by changing our perception, we can flip a whole conversation. This book is about all that.
